3 Ideas for Healthy and Tasty Breakfasts

3 ideas for healthy and tasty breakfasts

There are many different food philosophies in the world of nutrition today. Some of them advocate skipping breakfast, while others still claim it to be the ‘most important meal of the day’. A nourishing breakfast containing protein, carbohydrates and good fats can help set you up for an energized day ahead.

Whether you choose to eat it first thing in the morning, or a bit later in the day, here are some simple, healthy and tasty breakfast ideas that you can try.

1. Overnight oats

Oats are an excellent choice of unrefined carbohydrates that will help with sustained energy throughout the day. Pop them in your breakfast bowl and add chia seeds, plus any other nuts or seeds of your choice. Cover in water and leave in the fridge overnight. Soaking can greatly reduce any ‘anti-nutrients’ contained in grains, nuts and seeds and help make them easier to digest.

There are endless variations you can try, to suit your preferences. Add a drizzle of honey, or different flavors like cacao or cinnamon. You can also use other pre-cooked grains in place of the oats, for example quinoa, buckwheat or millet. In the morning, top with a dollop of natural yoghurt if desired, and add chopped fresh local fruits such as pineapple, papaya, mango or banana. Stir and enjoy!

2. Smoothies

Smoothies are a good breakfast option for busy people. Again, there are endless combinations you can try, based on your preferences. Coconut water makes a healthy and nutritious smoothie base. Add 1-2 bananas and any other fresh fruit that you desire.

It’s also a good idea to add some protein and good fats to your smoothie. This will help keep you fuller for longer, and will also provide your body with much needed nutrition. Protein and fat could come from milk or a milk alternative, yoghurt or coconut cream. Avocadoes are amazing for adding creaminess and superior nutrition to your smoothie.

3. Cooked breakfasts

You can also include protein powder for a protein boost if desired. Check out our listings for supplement stores near you.

If you’ve got a little more time on your hands, make yourself a cooked breakfast! Eggs are an incredibly nutritious choice for a cooked breakfast base. They are a complete protein, so they supply all your essential amino acids, which are the building blocks for protein.

Try them poached, scrambled or boiled and then add some of your other favorite healthy foods to the plate. Steam some local greens such as Kailan, and add some raw goodness to your plate such as sliced tomatoes and avocadoes.

For a vegan alternative to eggs, fried tempeh or scrambled silken tofu can work really well.

Overall, do away with processed cereals and breads which are typically very high in sugar. These will spike your blood sugar levels and then send them crashing down later, making you feel hungry and low on energy.
